How to Know If Your Bra Fits Properly

A well-fitting bra can be genuinely life-changing—but studies suggest that up to 80% of women are wearing the wrong size without even knowing it. If you've ever dealt with underwire digging in, straps slipping off your shoulders, or a band that rides up your back, you're not imagining it: your bra probably doesn't fit.

At Lingerie République, we've spent over 20 years helping women across the Bay Area discover what a truly well-fitting bra feels like. Here's how to tell whether yours is working for you—and what to look for when it isn't.

Start With the Band: Your Foundation of Support

The band does around 80% of the work in a bra. If it's not fitting correctly, nothing else will either. Here's what a well-fitting band looks like:

  • Sits level across your back. It shouldn't ride up toward your shoulder blades—if it does, the band is likely too loose.
  • Fits snugly but not tightly. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath, but no more.
  • Fastens on the loosest hook when new. This gives room to tighten as the elastic stretches over time.

Check the Cups: No Gaps, No Overflow

Cup fit is where most women run into trouble—often because they're wearing a cup that's too small while compensating with a larger band. Here's what to check:

  • No spillage. Breast tissue shouldn't spill over the top, sides, or underwire. This usually indicates the cup is too small.
  • No gaping. If the cup puckers or pulls away from the breast, it may be too large—or the shape may simply not be right for you.
  • The underwire frames the breast completely. It should lie flat against your ribcage and chest wall, not sit on top of breast tissue.

Straps: Support Helpers, Not Load-Bearers

Straps should contribute to lift and shape—but they shouldn't be doing the heavy lifting. Signs your straps need adjustment:

  • Digging in: This means the band is too loose and the straps are compensating. Try tightening the band size first.
  • Slipping off: Straps may be too wide-set for your shoulder width. Look for styles with adjustable, narrower-set straps.

The Center Gore: The Tell-Tale Test

The center gore—the small panel between the cups—should lie flat against your sternum. If it floats away from your body, the cups are too small, or the style isn't the right shape for your breast type. This single test is one of the most reliable indicators of fit.

Why Getting Professionally Fitted Matters

Self-fitting is a great starting point, but it has limitations. Bra sizing isn't universal—a 36C in one brand may fit very differently in another, and factors like breast shape, density, and projection all affect which styles and sizes truly work for your body.

That's why Lingerie République offers personalized bra fittings with experts who have over 20 years of professional fitting experience. We carry sizes from A through M cups and band sizes 28 through 50—because great fit shouldn't be limited to a narrow size range.
